Career sites vs job boards: who has fresher jobs? (2026)
Company career sites have the freshest listings, and our 2026 study of 340,740 new roles measured how fresh: where the company publishes an exact posting time, the median role was in the Find your role first feed 16 minutes after the company posted it. 79% arrived within 1 hour and 95% within 3 hours. Every job tool we checked states a slower refresh, from "hourly" to "same day".
Key findings
- 16 minutes, median, from a company posting a role to that role being in our feed (52,556 roles with an exact posting time).
- 79% within 1 hour, 95% within 3 hours.
- 27,000 to 45,000 new roles each weekday, and 2,000 to 4,000 on weekend days, across all sectors.
- 98% of US roles are posted Monday to Friday, 69% between 9am and 5pm Eastern, with the peak at 1pm ET.
- 10% of new roles closed within 3 days, 19% within 7 days and 26% within 10 days.
- 6% of "new" roles on one major applicant system were reposts, first published more than 30 days earlier.
How fresh are career sites compared to job tools?
A role goes live on the company's own careers site first. Everything else, from job boards to alert apps, copies it from there on its own schedule. That copy delay is the gap that matters when you're trying to apply early.
Here's what each tool says about its own refresh speed, next to what we measured for ours.
| Tool | Stated refresh or alert speed | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find your role first | 16 minutes, median, measured | $9 a month | this study |
| Jobstrack | "new matches every hour", "0-3 hours" | $19.99 a month | jobstrack.io |
| Simplify | "Fresh roles, added hourly" | free | simplify.jobs |
| LoopCV | "job collection every hour" on Done For You only | $89.99 a month for hourly | loopcv.pro |
| JobsPipe | "within 6 hours", or "within 1 hour" on top plans | $348 a month for 1 hour | jobspipe.dev |
| FoundRole | Pro alerts "same day" | $20 a month | foundrole.com |
| HiringCafe | "real time", no number given | free | hiringcafe.com |
| Underdog.io | weekly introductions on Mondays | free for candidates | underdog.io |
All competitor claims are taken from each vendor's own pages, as of October 2026. Jobstrack's page also puts LinkedIn and Indeed at "12-48 hours". We didn't measure the big boards ourselves, so treat that as Jobstrack's claim.
Our number is a measured median. The others are stated claims, and several are upper bounds tied to the priciest plan. So the fair reading is simple: 16 minutes is faster than any refresh speed a competitor states, at $9 a month, the lowest price of any paid job feed with AI agent access.
When do companies post new jobs?
Weekdays carry nearly all of it. We saw about 27,000 to 45,000 new roles each weekday and only 2,000 to 4,000 on Saturdays and Sundays.
For US roles, by Eastern time:
- 98% were posted Monday to Friday.
- 69% were posted between 9am and 5pm ET.
- The busiest hour was 1pm ET.
- Tuesday and Thursday were the busiest weekdays. Monday was the quietest weekday.
If you check once a day, check in the late afternoon Eastern. Most of that day's roles will be up by then. If you want to be first, you need something that watches all day, like a followed company alert or the live new jobs pages.
How fast do job postings close?
Faster than most people expect. We followed 113,031 tech and business roles first seen October 5 to 9 and checked them on October 18.
| Time since first seen | Share closed |
|---|---|
| 3 days | 10% |
| 7 days | 19% |
| 10 days | 26% |
Among the roles that closed, the median one was open for 5 days. A role you find a week late has roughly a one in five chance of already being gone, and the ones still open have had a week of applicants.
Are "new" jobs always new?
No. On one major applicant system, 6% of roles that showed up as new had been first published more than 30 days earlier. They were old roles reappearing. On a job board that sorts by date, a repost like that can look brand new. Our ghost job guide covers how to spot stale postings.
Method
What we measured, and nothing more:
- Window: roles first seen in our feed from October 4 to 17, 2026.
- Sample: 340,740 new roles across all sectors.
- Speed: measured only where the company publishes an exact posting time, 52,556 roles. For each one we compared that posting time with the time the role entered our feed and took the median.
- Posting times: US roles, converted to Eastern time.
- Closing: 113,031 tech and business roles first seen October 5 to 9, 2026, with status checked as of October 18, 2026.
- Reposts: roles whose first-published date on one major applicant system was more than 30 days before we first saw them.
- Competitor speeds: taken from each vendor's own pages on October 18, 2026. We didn't test them.
The feed covers 15,000+ company career sites, including Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and Workday, plus the big in-house sites like Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft and Netflix.
What this means for your search
Apply early, apply on the company's own site, and don't trust a date sort on its own. Browse companies hiring right now, see the software engineering roles posted this week, or connect an AI agent to the feed so it can check new roles for you.
