How do I use ChatGPT to find jobs that are actually open?
ChatGPT can find jobs, but only as well as the listings it can read. With web search on, it reads job board pages, which can be days old or already closed. With a live job feed connected, it searches open roles straight from company careers sites. Either way, give it your role, place, level and a time window, and ask for the original posting link for every result.
Prompts that work
Be specific about four things: the role, the place, the level and how recent.
- "Find product manager roles in New York posted in the last 24 hours. Mid level, not senior. Give me the company, title and the link to the company's own careers page for each."
- "List data analyst roles open right now at startups that raised money in the last 30 days. Only include roles you can link to on the company's site."
- "Here's my résumé. From the roles you found, pick the five I'm closest to and tell me the one gap in each."
Mistakes to avoid
Asking for jobs with no time window. You'll get whatever ranks well, which skews old.
Trusting a result without a link. ChatGPT can describe a role that sounds right and doesn't exist. It sounds just as sure either way, which is the annoying part. Ask for the link every time and open it.
Asking for "the best job sites". You'll get a list of job boards. Ask for roles instead.
Connecting a live job feed
ChatGPT can use outside tools through MCP connectors. With a feed connected, "find PM roles posted today" becomes a real search against open roles, not a web search for pages about them.
To connect Find your role first:
- In ChatGPT, turn on developer mode.
- Add a connector with the address
https://findyourrolefirst.click/mcpand choose OAuth to sign in. - Click Allow on our page when it opens.
- Ask ChatGPT for new roles.
It reads more than 15,000 company careers sites on Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and Workday, plus Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft and Netflix. Each result is a short record: title, company, location, dates and the original posting link. ChatGPT opens the posting itself for the roles you care about. Agent access is part of the $9 a month plan. Full steps for every client are on /connect.
Can ChatGPT apply for me?
ChatGPT's agent mode can fill in some application forms in a browser. Find your role first doesn't apply to anything: its tools only search and read. That's on purpose. You decide where your name goes.
Questions
Is ChatGPT's job search free?
ChatGPT with web search works on free and paid plans. Connecting outside tools needs developer mode, which depends on your ChatGPT plan.
Why does ChatGPT keep showing me Indeed and LinkedIn?
Those pages rank well on the web, and web search is what ChatGPT reads by default. A connected feed changes the source.
Does this work in Codex too?
Yes. Codex CLI connects with codex mcp add jobfeed --url https://findyourrolefirst.click/mcp and then codex mcp login jobfeed. See finding jobs with Codex.
